HaraMeter™ FAQs

What is it?

The HaraMeter™  measures expansion and contraction of the lower abdomen (hara in Japanese).  Development of the hara is critical in Zen training and in training in the Japanese martial arts.  These disciplines require a form of deep abdominal breathing, referred to as hara or tanden breathing.  The HaraMeter™ provides information that can help accelerate and deepen the learning of this kind of breathing.  For more information about the importance of hara, read the series on hara.

Who is it for?

The HaraMeter™ can be helpful to practitioners of Zen and/or the martial arts at the beginning, intermediate and advanced stages of training.   It is also an excellent way for teachers of these disciplines to demonstrate hara breathing.  The HaraMeter™ may also be of interest to practitioners of other forms of meditation and for anyone who wants to develop abdominal breathing the purposes of relaxation and/or general vitality.

The HaraMeter™ is an exercise device.  It is not intended to treat medical nor psychiatric problems.  It should not be used by pregnant women nor by individuals with hernias or after abdominal surgery.  Discontinue its use if you develop abdominal or lower back pain.  Consult a physician if you have any questions or concerns about its safety given your medical condition.
